Hilary Benn MP, Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary, commenting on the announcement of the new agreement between President Santos and the FARC leader Timoleon Jimenez ‘Timochenko’, said:

“This is a very important breakthrough in the Colombian peace process which will be widely and warmly welcomed. The issue of justice has been the most difficult one to deal with as part of the peace talks, and that is why this announcement is so significant.

“I congratulate all those involved, with the support of the Government of Cuba, for demonstrating their willingness to compromise in the interests of peace. The people of Colombia will now look forward to the signing of a final peace agreement as soon as possible and to progress being made on agreeing a bilateral ceasefire.”
